What You'll Do

This position reports to the VP, Finance & Administration. The Accountant would be responsible for monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting; accounting reconciliation; review of the submission of accounts receivable and accounts payable transactions; reviewing/approving journal entries or as needed completion of journal entries; assist in year-end closure and prepare reports for year-end analysis; support UMS departments with financial data requests; contribute to any special projects assigned by the UMS's VP of Finance & Administration

(45%) Responsible for monthly financial reports 

  • Download financial data and financial reports (gross payroll register, service unit billings) from the central ERP system to update monthly financial statements and management reports. 
  • Monitor, analyze, reconcile, and prepare monthly financial statement; income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flow and management reports.
  • Investigate financial discrepancies and report findings to VP, Finance & Administration for review and plan of action.                                                            
  • Distribute monthly financial statements and financial reports to various internal and external stakeholders.
  • Customize as needed financial reporting systems and processes to address ongoing updates
  • Meet with respective department leadership to review monthly financial data
  • Make any necessary follow-up adjustments


(20%) Monthly Variance Analysis and Reconciliations

  •  Prepare balance sheet and income statement flux analysis and research variances, perform monthly reconciliation of the general ledger detail for both income statement and balance sheet activity
  • Review compiled ledger data on a weekly basis via Accounts Payable online system
  • Review weekly wire transfer from University to outside checking account 
  • Reconcile monthly bank statement to ledger 
  • Review prepared templates, populate with appropriate data from queries and various systems
  • Transfer approved budgets to UMS department heads and establish monthly spread of the budget
  • Prepare monthly budget variance reports in conjunction with internal UMS departments
  • Meet and discuss monthly variance and plans to correct any budget shortfalls to ensure proper accounting of funds
  • Provide monthly budget variance report to VP, Finance & Administration for review

(15%) Journal Entry Preparation and Submission

  • Prepare, process and post regular monthly journal entries (i.e. general ledger corrections, show revenue, prepaid expenses, depreciation, online donations, service charges, credit card transfers, etc.)
  • Prepare and post semi-annual affiliate settlements via journal entries based on the prepared settlement report
  • Prepare, process and post annual year-end closing entries
  • Review weekly voucher accounts payable journal entry uploads for chartfield accuracy


(15%) Various

  • Assist the VP for Finance in various special projects and other duties as directed
  • Run ad hoc reports as necessary

(5%) 990 Tax reporting

  • Assist VP for Finance with completion of IRS tax form 990
  • Assist in manipulation of UMS audited financial data to populate IRS 990 forms

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor Degree in Accounting.
  • Knowledge and practice of Accounting concepts, practices, and procedures
  • Experience in financial accounting, reconciling, creating, analyzing, and reporting financial information as evidenced by 5-8 years of accounting work experience.
  • Proficiency in data querying software (e.g. PeopleSoft).  Knowledge of different data systems resulting in examples of how data is extracted, manipulated, and used in a report.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products, particularly advanced functions in Excel.
  • Strong customer service competencies
  • Demonstrated ability to create clear written procedures and/or oral presentations 
  • Demonstrated ability to be a positive influence on the work team as evidenced by an approachable, positive attitude resulting in increased collaboration and support of group initiatives.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail, ability to problem solve and use critical thinking skills and a self-starter with the ability to multi-task and prioritize.

  • Experience working in a non-profit organization
  • Experience working with a performing arts organization
  • Knowledge of University of Michigan policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of CRM systems
  • Experience with M-Pathways (PeopleSoft), Business Objects Querying/Reporting Tool
