JOB SUMMARY
Working under the supervision of the department head, the Authorization/Referral Coordinator schedules diagnostic and surgical procedures for clinic patients, including but not limited to radiology, cardiopulmonary, sleep, physical therapy, occupational therapy, infusion therapy, pre-surgical and surgical services. Coordinates and assures all patient referrals to outside providers are communicated and documented for continuity of care. Performs preauthorization for targeted procedures, testing, and medical equipment including, but not limited to, surgeries, allergy testing, and hearing aids to attain maximum reimbursement and patient satisfaction. Coordinates postoperative appointment scheduling.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Manages the referral process for clinic providers.
- Accurately assembles and documents all pertinent patient information when scheduling surgical and diagnostic procedures.
- Verifies and pre-authorizes select diagnostic and surgical procedures ordered by clinic providers.
- Provides superior ongoing patient satisfaction and customer service.
- Communicates with patients in a timely and concise manner regarding procedures/attaining services and related information needed
- Cross-trained and competent in all Registration Specialist and Health Records Specialists duties when assigned.
- Actively participates in the Ambulatory Clinic Quality Program
- Complies with the hospital's Corporate Compliance Program including, but not limited to, the Code of Conduct, laws and regulations, and hospital and department policies and procedures.
- Must be free from governmental sanctions involving health care and/or financial practices.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Education
- High school graduate or GED.
- Licensure
- None
- Experience
- One year of medical office scheduling experience preferred. Computer training and medical terminology training completed within one year of hire.

- The ability to maintain continuing education requirements and all certifications and licenses as required
- Excellent interpersonal skills needed to work with staff and physicians.
- Able to communicate positively in stressful situations.
- Efficient time management and prioritization skills.
- Ability to handle various projects simultaneously and efficiently with attention to accuracy, prioritization, and patient request in a stressful environment with distractions and frequent interruptions.
- Computer Knowledge including the ability to enter material into electronic record. Ability to operate telephone, fax, computer, and copy machine to perform the duties of the position.
