What do we need:
We are seeking an individual who is passionate about the difference that diet, lifestyle, and supplementation can make in a person’s overall health and wellbeing. This person will support the translation of emerging science into solution design, the execution of collaborative translational research, and deliver global clinical trial programming that will build evidence in the nutritional supplement industry. Additionally, they will lead a talented team of clinical investigators tasked with building evidence of the supplements we design through thorough review of the scientific literature with research designed to support selection of raw materials, intellectual property and where needed clinical research. The successful candidate will have a minimum of a 10-year track record in clinical trials design and execution including leading the development of programmatic clinical research strategies using dietary supplement interventions. This will include a history of peer-reviewed publications and successful funding applications from government or non-profit institutions. The successful candidate will have an extensive network in both academia and industry as evidenced by collaborative projects and society memberships.

The Nutrition Science and Clinical Investigation team is a highly skilled team of eight scientists with PhDs in multiple disciplines, working across the nutrition portfolio to ensure the development of effective nutritional products (Nutraceutical/dietary supplements) with appropriate substantiation and reason to believe in the efficacy of the product. This team sits at the interface among different R & D (Research & Development) functions and serves to help design and execute research and synthesize information from the fuzzy front end to commercialization. The team of clinical investigators serves as an important pool of “expert speakers” interacting at the front lines with Amway Business Owner’s (ABOs) to help them understand the design and intended use of products in the context of an overall health & wellness routine.

This role is critical to the success and transformation of ABO’s who act at the center of Health & Wellness communities around the globe. Health & Wellness success is predicated upon an understanding of human biology and how that is impacted by our genes and our environment. The incumbent will be responsible for synthesizing the evidence in a scientifically accurate AND end-user relevant way to help ABOs understand the competitive advantage of Amway products and how that impacts wellness from both inside and outside our bodies. In addition, this role will be responsible for the design and execution of studies that support the development and substantiation of product claims. This role is tasked with bringing credible information to their communities. To do this, the applicant will need to have a depth of understanding of human biology, a talent for making complex scientific information relatable, and have standing in the external scientific community. This role will require an ability to navigate the complex business environment of Amway to bring this work to life. Experience in translation of benchtop science into relevant real-world outcomes will be critical to this person’s success. The incumbent will also develop and lead a global community of practice around Nutrition Science and Clinical investigation to improve strategic focus for new research, improve conversion of translational research (internal and via partnership) to commercial outcomes, and improve science support and substantiation in go to market commercialization. You will lead a global community in this discipline and manage a talented team of US based Clinical Investigators who work each day to make a difference in health & wellness with our portfolio design and strategy.
Required qualifications:
- PhD in Nutrition Science, Biomedical Science or relevant discipline, MD or ND
- Leadership experience managing individuals and teams
- Minimum 10 years of experience in clinical research on natural products
- Extensive experience with the design and execution and data analysis of various clinical trial methodologies (including emerging methods of real-world evidence and big data collection and including working with international partners)
- Track record of scientific publication (minimum expectation of 20 publications given years of experience) in peer-reviewed journals and/or grant funding from government or private funding agencies
- Experience developing research strategies at a programmatic level
- Timely delivery of research results
- Ability to translate scientific and clinical literature to meaningful and actionable recommendations that can be understood by lay people
Skills to be successful in the role:
- Managing budgets, building timelines, and basic business finance
- Experience communicating scientific information to lay communities
- Knowledge of regulatory bodies globally, and regulations pertaining to dietary supplements (as well as claims substantiation)
- Managing and prioritizing multiple and sometimes competing projects
- Ability to organize and influence a global community of experts in clinical investigation
- Ability to form and maintain external and external expert networks
- Fluency with digital platforms for data acquisition, analysis and presentation, communication and business software (e.g. MS Office)
