Abaco Systems is a global leader in modular, high performance, open architecture, standards-based rugged embedded computing for the most demanding applications in defense and industry. Our products and solutions are found in high-profile military/aerospace sea, land and air programs, plus commercial and industrial organizations in which rugged reliability is mission-critical.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a Mechanical/Thermal Design Engineer with expertise in developing thermally and structurally challenging products for rugged environments. You will design advanced thermal and structural solutions for ruggedized single-board computers and other electronic devices, used primarily in conduction and convection-cooled environments, while also having knowledge of air flow through and liquid cooling techniques. This position offers the opportunity to work with a global team, leveraging best practices from international sites, and contributing to innovative designs for military and aerospace applications. We value a culture of continuous improvement to ensure our solutions remain at the forefront of the industry.

Key Responsibilities:

* Design, develop, and evaluate rugged electronic products for military and aerospace applications
* Perform structural and thermal analysis to ensure compliance with stringent performance and environmental specifications
* Create detailed CAD models and comprehensive drawing packages for component fabrication
* Lead shock, vibration, and thermal testing to validate and optimize product designs
* Support prototype builds, including first article inspections, ensuring accuracy and functionality
* Collaborate closely with customers and vendors to ensure designs meet performance standards and customer specifications
* Propose design strategies and establish key parameters for successful project execution
* Contribute to a global team, sharing best practices across sites to drive continuous improvement

Education and Experience:

* Bachelor's degree in mechanical or Aeronautical Engineering from an accredited institution

* 2+ years of professional mechanical design experience (internship or co-op experience also considered)

Desired Qualifications/Characteristics:

* Expertise in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks), with strong mechanical design skills
* Experience in thermal, flow, and structural analysis
* Understanding of materials and processes used in rugged electronic packaging
* Familiarity with shock, vibration, and thermal testing methods
* Proactive problem-solver with the ability to work independently and make informed decisions with minimal supervision
* Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex technical information
* A collaborative team player, capable of managing design and schedule targets within project constraints
* Experience with air flow through and liquid cooling systems is highly desirable
