Job Summary

The Department of Internal Medicine, Division of General Medicine, is seeking an experienced and motivated statistical analyst to support the analysis of data derived from surveys, insurance claims, and geographic datasets. The position presents an exciting opportunity to contribute to the research of a faculty member focused on population health and health care research.

This position requires proficiency in diverse research methods and assistance in writing sections of manuscripts and grants. The ability to apply independent problem-solving to existing and emerging scientific knowledge is required. This position requires advanced communication skills and being highly interactive with other team members. Participation in career development seminars and workshops is supported and encouraged.

This position offers a flexible Hybrid work schedule, including remote work, but it requires some office presence (weekly or bi-weekly).

Job salary will be commensurate with experience and education.

Responsibilities*

This position involves a wide range of tasks related to the management and analysis of quantitative data from surveys, claims, and geographic data. Specifically, the position involves providing independent and collaborative statistical support including:

  • Determine the appropriate statistical testing/modeling approach in accordance with the project's design. 
  • Create, manipulate, merge, and maintain large, complex datasets.
  • Independently conduct appropriate statistical methods.
  • Summarize, interpret, and present results in written, tabular and visual formats for reports, manuscripts, and presentations.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation of data and analysis files.
  • Mentor and train junior/intermediate analysts and student assistants.
  • Regularly update PI and team on progress and participate in team meetings (virtual and in-person).
  • Contribute to the writing of manuscripts and grant proposals.
  • Perform data acquisition and management activities including sensitive and restricted data (e.g., CMS data and geographic codes).

Required Qualifications*

  • Masters degree with at least 6-8 years of experience or PhD with at least 5 years of experience in statistics, public health, public policy, economics, or a related field focused on data analysis and interpretation.
  • At least 6-8 years of experience in data management, statistical analysis and independent programming. Experience using Stata is preferred; experience with R, SAS, or Python is optional.
  • Experience with large datasets, complex data structures, and linkages between data sources.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and efficiently work on multiple projects at the same time.
  • Flexibility and ability to work independently and collaboratively with team members and researchers.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written in the English language.
  • Proven ability to accurately and efficiently assess technical problems and provide/program solutions.
  • Proven ability to write clear and concise technical documentation, summaries of various methodologies, and descriptions of statistical results.
  • Track record for successfully meeting project goals and deliverables in a timely manner.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience leading teams in statistical analysis and database management. 
  • Experience working on and managing secure data servers.
  • Training or experience in composite measure development.
  • Expertise and experience in geographic data analysis. 
  • Experience in using large longitudinal data.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
