Job Summary
The Epidemiology Branch in the Division of Intramural Research of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Research Triangle Park, North Carolina is recruiting aStaff Scientist for the Environment and Cancer Epidemiology Group. The goal of the research group is to improve the understanding of how exposure to environmental chemicals impacts the development of cancer in women. The group uses resources from the Sister Study cohort, a large prospective US-wide cohort of women, to address this overarching goal. State-of-the-art exposure assessment and analytic methods are used to elucidate how environmental chemicals, individually and in combination, influence cancer incidence.
The successful candidate will support research activities and training in the field of environmental and cancer epidemiology and administrative support as needed. The primary responsibilities of the successful candidate will be to: 1) Lead scientific activities pertaining to chemical exposures and cancer incidence; 2) Serve as a resource for knowledge of statistical and epidemiologic methods for current and new members of the research group and external collaborators; and 3) Mentor postbaccalaureate fellows, medical fellows, and summer students.
A Staff Scientist 1 is an NIH employee generally appointed to a time-limited, renewable position, similar to that of a non-tenure track research faculty at many universities. Staff Scientists do not receive independent resources, but often work independently and have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the laboratory. Staff Scientists should be capable of independently designing studies, but do not have responsibilities for initiating new research programs. The Staff Scientist Position will directly report to Dr. Alexandra White and be supported by the resources of the Environment and Cancer Epidemiology Group.
Required Qualifications
Candidates should have both a doctoral degree (PhD or ScD or the equivalent) and at least 3 years of postdoctoral training in epidemiology, environmental health sciences or statistics with applications to epidemiologic data including a strong record of relevant scientific publication. Preference will be given to candidates with a proven track record of research on health effects of environmental exposures on cancer outcomes and with relevant expertise for assessment and analysis of exposure to environmental chemicals using high-dimensional exposomics and metabolomics data. Special consideration will be given to candidates with experience implementing chemical mixtures analysis, survival analysis, and epidemiologic methods for analyzing complex longitudinal data. The candidate must demonstrate strong quantitative skills including mastery of multiple statistical programming software packages (e.g., SAS, R). The successful candidate will display high scientific research productivity as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications as well as oral presentations. Mentoring experience is desired but not required.
