Citizens Concerned for Children, Inc. is a not-for-profit law office that has provided legal representation to the children of Tompkins County for over thirty years, expanding to Cortland County in 2018. Since its opening in 1986, Citizens Concerned for Children, Inc. has been recognized for its exemplary standard of practice, including its commitment to treating clients with compassion and respect; zealously advocating for them; using the law and legal remedies creatively; and seeking to improve the representation of children within the community by modeling excellence. Our clients are typically involved in the following types of legal proceedings: abuse and neglect, termination of parental rights, custody and matrimonial, juvenile delinquency, paternity, adoption, family offense, and persons in need of supervision. The agency has offices in Tompkins County and Cortland County.


The staff paralegal is a critical representative of Citizens Concerned for Children, Inc. The paralegal supports the work of the attorneys and works under their direct supervision.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Helps the attorneys prepare pleadings, orders, petitions, motion papers, demands for discovery, and other legal documents;
  • Conducts routine correspondence on matters where policies and procedures have been defined;
  • Helps maintain office-wide records and correspondence files;
  • Conducts legal research;
  • Maintain calendar and files in compliance with the office's best practices expectations; and
  • Perform such other appropriate responsibilities as assigned by the Managing Attorney which may include some administrative tasks.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Combination of related and relevant educational background and experience. Bachelor's Degree in related filed or Associate's Degree in paralegal studies or legal assisting is preferred.
  • Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel and various computer applications.
  • Knowledge of general legal principles, practices, and procedures of the Courts.
  • Knowledge of legal research tools such as Westlaw and working knowledge of legal terminology and legal writing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively with other CCCI staff, CCCI Interns and court staff.
  • Excellent time management skills to ensure quality of work and meet deadlines while supporting a diverse and demanding caseload.
  • A current NYS driver's license and a registered, insured vehicle available for use during working hours.
  • Respect for, and an ability to work with, diverse populations.
