The Company

The North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation is an independent self-funding 501(c)3 nonprofit organization supporting activities that help meet the educational and health needs of today's society and future generations. For decades, the Foundation has been a proud supporter of programs in our state that help advance science, health and education.

The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors that includes community leaders. The day to day operations are overseen by the staff.

The Foundation was the vision of Glaxo chairman and chief executive, the late Joseph J. Ruvane, Jr. Mr. Ruvane brought the company from Florida to the Research Triangle Park and with it his passion for community. His vision was to establish an annually budgeted corporate giving program and a stable, long-term source of support for our state. In 1996, the company ceased funding the foundation. The foundation's growth is based solely on investment and market growth derived from its own independent endowment.

Since establishment in 1986, they have awarded $90.1 million in grants over 37 years! They pay approximately $3 million in grants each year to North Carolina nonprofit organizations.

Traditional Grants

The North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation provides Traditional grants of $25,000 and above to organizations working to help meet the educational needs of today’s society and future generations. The Foundation’s primary focus is to provide seed funds for new and worthwhile educational programs in the state of North Carolina. The request must be for programs that benefit a large geographical region or provide a statewide impact. Proposals may be submitted for one year of funding or multi-year funding with a maximum duration of five years. Proposals should advance science, health, or educational attainment, but not provide medical assistance.

Ribbon of Hope Grants

The North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation invites nonprofit organizations to apply for grants of $50,000 for projects furthering science, health and education in their local communities. These grants are intended to offer organizations an opportunity to develop a pilot or new initiative or to grow and expand and/or enhance an existing program. The Foundation does not fund indirect or overhead costs, construction or renovation projects, equipment, the delivery or facilitation of access to healthcare, medical assistance or services.

Women in Science Scholars Program

The North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation Women in Science Scholars Program offers a unique educational opportunity by coupling college scholarships with a mentoring program.

The Foundation has established endowed scholarships at 30 colleges and universities across North Carolina. Two outstanding undergraduate science students, usually in their sophomore year, are selected annually by each school as North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation Women in Science Scholars. Selected scholars demonstrate a strong interest in science and maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 scale).

Each student is paired with a GlaxoSmithKline mentor who provides valuable leadership to students by sharing her experiences and insights, and providing science career guidance.

The North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation hosts two annual events for Women in Science Scholars, an annual meeting in October and a conference in the spring, inviting scholars, mentors, faculty representatives and staff for a day of networking, learning and sharing.

Child Health Recognition Awards

The North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation Child Health Recognition Awards program honors local health departments, public health staff and individuals for innovative, collaborative programs that improve the lives of North Carolina’s children. The Foundation works with the

North Carolina Public Health Association(NCPHA) to coordinate the program, and all nominees and award recipients are recognized at a luncheon at NCPHA’s annual meeting. Recognition awards are presented in four categories: Lifetime Achievement, Individual, Local Health Departments and Public Health Staff. The awards include grants and scholarships that promote public health study and programs that benefit children. Up to three health departments and three to five individuals are honored annually.

Public health professionals know that providing care and services for families and children can be done in different ways. Sometimes, children come to clinics for health services; other times, services come to them in the form of mobile dental clinics, health fairs or through school nurse programs. Mothers of autistic children meet for lunch to support each other through challenges, while elsewhere new mothers meet with supportive coaches who teach them to breastfeed their babies. And the local health department "clinic" may not be inside at all, but in the open air at community gardens, to learn about nutrition and combat obesity with fresh vegetables and fruit.

While health care can be delivered in different ways, North Carolina's public health providers have these traits in common: passion, dedication and commitment to the children and families they serve. The Role

As External Communications Enterprise Director, you will be responsible for leading the strategy and execution of communications and charitable giving programs for North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation. You will also serve as a leader in community partnerships and North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation gift matching.

The North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation supports activities in North Carolina that help meet the educational and health needs of today’s society and future generations. The Foundation focuses on programs that emphasize the understanding and application of health, science, and education at all educational and professional levels.

The Executive Director (ED) serves as chief executive officer for the Foundation Board of Directors. The ED confers with leading health, science and education policy and program leaders to develop recommendations on Foundation policies, procedures, areas of focus, types of grants and programs for approval by the Foundation Board. The ED proactively works with the Board to research and develop a strategic plan for Foundation activities and identify projects and areas of need for potential grant support that are consistent with the mission of the Foundation.

With the approval of the Board, the ED will design and implement a grant management system for the North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation including strategic priorities, policies, procedures and guidelines, budget allocation, program development, and program evaluation in compliance with relevant state and federal laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Governance

  • Ensure that the Board in the administration of Foundation programs and grantmaking activities adherers to the Articles of Incorporation and all relevant federal and states laws and regulations as well as policies and procedures developed and approved by the Board.

  • Ensure adequate staffing of Board standing committees including audit, investment, governance, and nominating/selection as well as ad hoc committees established by the Board.

Financial

  • Work with the Board of Directors, staff and firms retained by the Board to oversee the investment of assets and the disbursement of those assets as well as implement recommendations on program policies, procedures, areas of focus, and types of support.

  • Direct the management of the freestanding, grantmaking organization with an average of $60M in assets and an average annual payout of $3M consistent with Foundation mission, vision and objectives and state and federal regulatory requirements.

  • Responsible for receiving, evaluating, and administering other funds contributed to the Foundation by the corporation for special programs and projects within the scope of the Foundation and of interest to the corporation.

Operational

  • Oversee and direct the implementation of two statewide programs funded by the Foundation specifically Women in Science and the Child Health Recognition Awards.

  • Represent the Foundation to foster potential collaborative programs and projects with significant stakeholders including senior management, university presidents and other leadership, officials of other foundations, corporations, state and national professional organizations, state, and federal elected and appointed officials.

  • Oversee and direct the design and implement of the Foundation’s communication program including preparation of the Foundation’s annual report, application, brochures and special programs, presentations, and events.

  • Supervise Foundation staff including fiscal staff, program and communication staff, administrative and temporary support staff and consultants and vendors assigned to special projects.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Must have at minimum an advanced degree in finance, business, liberal arts, social sciences, or law.

  • Eight years of experience working with foundation boards.

  • Experience in public service and/or foundations required.

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • A demonstrated statewide awareness and understanding.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated expertise in research and analysis and project management.

  • Excellent management skills, communication skills and organizational skills.

  • Ability to interact effectively with senior management and high-level external contacts.

  • Integrity, judgement, and diplomacy in response to sensitive requests for funding.

  • Experience in the pharmaceutical industry is a plus but not required.
