Job Title:  Environmental Health Safety Manager

Reports to: Plant Director

Number of Direct Reports: 1

Key Internal Partners: EHS Managers from other sites, Production, Maintenance, Technical Services, Engineering, Projects Managers, Continuous Improvement, Quality, Finance, Purchasing, IT, Human Resources, Supply Chain, Plant Safety Committee, Plant First Responders

Key External Partners: Local emergency agencies, local medical providers, First Responders, Regulatory Agencies, MNA’s Workers’ Compensation case management adjusters

Job Summary:

The Environmental, Health, Safety (EHS) Manager is responsible for facilitating, supporting, and ensuring compliance with company rules, policies, and practices, as well as regulatory agencies, permits, and other applicable laws and standards. This role engages leaders and employees to improve plant performance by promoting a safety-first culture, reducing the risk of safety incidents through education, training, sound work practices, and providing tools and systems that deliver improved environmental and safety performance. Additionally, the EHS Manager is responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing aspects of facility and security programs, and championing projects that drive improvement in key EHS and facilities security key performance indicators (KPIs).

Job Responsibilities & Tasks:

Safety and Environmental Compliance and Management:

  • Promote a safety and environment mindset within the organization through behavioral dialogs.
  • Review and report findings from incident investigations, facility inspections or environmental testing.
  • Monitor all potential pollutants to air, water, or ground contaminants to ensure compliance with environmental standards.
  • Implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence of incidents.
  • Develop and deliver training programs related to environmental regulations, permits, and safety.
  • Chemical/Machine Safety Standards
    • Promote a culture of safety by ensuring all personnel are trained and adhere to chemical safety protocols.
    • Contributes to quality assurance and complies with the measures and requirements specified by GMP, HACCP and other quality systems if needed.
    • Oversee the proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous chemicals, ensuring compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) principles.
    • Implement and enforce chemical waste policies to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and minimize environmental impact.
    • Conduct regular safety inspections and audits.
  • Project Management
    • Develop and present proposals for safety and environmental improvements and specifications for new installations.
    • Work closely with other departments to ensure safety and environmental principles are integrated and adhered to.
    • Develop and incorporate comprehensive safety and environmental procedures, including manuals, standards and guidelines.
    • Lead project teams, assigning tasks, setting deadlines, and monitoring progress.
    • In collaboration with the HR department, plan and manage training programs ensuring compliance with Federal and State Law.
  • Risk Assessment/Mitigation
    • Analyzes risks and incidents in collaboration with departments and develop mitigation strategies.
    • Ensures application of change management principles to avoid incidents connected with change due to lack of planning and proper communication.
    • Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with safe workplace programs, policies and procedures that enhance incident prevention and compliance with company, local, state and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and  environmental regulations.
  • Medical Management/Workers Compensation
    • Ensures that all facilities comply with personal protection standards.
    • Communicate, coach and enforce the company's safety policies and procedures.
    • Implement the necessary safety resources and ensure their proper functioning.
    • Diligently manage Worker’s Compensation claims to ensure appropriate employee care and to facilitate timely claim closure.
    • Collaborate with Human Resources and the leadership and supervision within the applicable work area and shift in all situations involving modified work duty, work restrictions, or accommodation.
  • Budgeting
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive departmental budget plan, considering all operational needs and strategic initiatives.
    • Prepare detailed financial reports and forecasts, providing insights and recommendations to optimize budget utilization.
    • Work closely with other departments to coordinate budgetary needs and ensure alignment with overall organizational financial goals.
  • Collaboration
    • Work closely with site leaders, Engineering, Operations, and other departments to coordinate work activities, required sampling, and monitoring.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies, local authorities, and other stakeholders regarding EHS matters.
    • Collaborate with external companies and contractors to ensure safety and environmental (environmental isn’t just waste and recycling but also construction requires a stormwater permit for each construction project) principles are integrated and adhered to during projects.
    • Manage contracts with waste removal firms and ensure efficient processes for waste collection, storage, and removal.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field highly preferred, related certifications and experience will be considered in lieu of a degree

Experience:

  • Preferred minimum of 5 years’ experience. Experience in a Food, Beverage, or Pharmaceutical Manufacturing/Plant preferred, international a plus

Preferred Skills:

  • Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels of the organization, including leadership, employees, and external stakeholders.
  • Experience with ISO (14001, 45001, 50001) and other relevant standards and certifications highly preferred.
  • Proficiency in using data analysis and reporting tools to interpret and present data effectively.
  • Strong skills in conducting incident investigations and performing root cause analysis to identify and address underlying issues.
  • Knowledge/experience with federal, state, and local compliance requirements.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite programs.

Physical & Travel Requirements

  • Must be able work in normal office conditions for a minimum of 8 hours per day.
  • Must be able lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Must be able to travel intermittently via airplane within the U.S. and internationally.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed largely in an office environment and on manufacturing plant floor. Hours of work will generally be during regular business hours with at least 40 hours a week. At times there will be some variation in work hours due to special projects, deadlines and other concerns.
