Responsibilities*

  • Planning, organizing, scheduling and the supervision of construction and renovation projects in hospital, health care, laboratory, classroom, office and research facilities.
  • Assign and supervise trades work involving the application of Carpentry, Painting, Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC, Fire Alarm, Fire Suppression, Masonry, Plaster and other Skilled Trades.
  • Estimate job requirements including Trade(s), quantity of time, equipment and supplies required.
  • Meet with customers to create scope of work that meets user requirements and budget.
  • Manage the work of contractors hired to support construction projects.
  • Review daily time records, approve daily time records and correct errors.
  • Procure material for renovation projects and oversee staging both on-site and off-site.
  • Planning and directing trades work; appraising their productivity and efficiency, helping resolve problems, handling their complaints and grievances and disciplining them when necessary.
  • Provide leadership, coaching and mentoring to subordinate group.
  • Work with design teams to review drawings and specifications for feasibility and cost.

Required Qualifications*

  • High School degree or 5 years of experience in construction.
  • Proficiency in communicating effectively through email.
  • Ability to use a computer to manage work orders.
  • Experience and ability to directly supervise skilled trade workers.
  • Proven ability to provide professional customer service.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and leader.
  • Ability to maintain organized records (printed and electronic).
  • Ability to relate to individuals from diverse, ethnic, cultural, and economic backgrounds.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in construction management, Engineering or Architecture.
  • Knowledge and experience with work order management software, MS office products, and Scheduling software.
  • Experience in managing University construction and renovation projects.
  • Experience in managing hospital and health care construction and renovation projects.

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
