Full Job Description

The Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University (GW) welcomes applications and nominations for the Chair of the Department of Global Health position. The School is CEPH-accredited with graduate-level research and education programs spanning seven departments: Prevention and Community Health; Biostatistics and Bioinformatics; Environmental and Occupational Health; Epidemiology; Exercise and Nutrition Sciences; Global Health; and Health Policy and Management.

About the Department of Global Health: The Departments mission is to improve the health and well-being of underserved populations around the world through excellence in education of the next generation of global public health practitioners, researchers, and policymakers; research that addresses some of the most important health problems in these communities; and translation of research into programs and policies at the local, national, and international levels. The Department of Global Health is a diverse department with faculty expertise in: reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health; health policy and systems; global nutrition; humanitarian health; environmental health; health economics; and infectious diseases. The Department offers several degree programs, including a PhD in Global Health Sciences, and Masters in Public Health (MPH) in: Global Health Epidemiology and Disease Control; Global Health Program Design, Monitoring & Evaluation; Global Health Policy & Systems; Global Environmental Health; Humanitarian Health; and a Global Health online MPH. More information about the Department and School are available online. Starting as early as July 2025, this Chair position represents an uncommon opportunity to harness the strengths of a diverse faculty representing a broad range of disciplines. The successful candidate will build on the excellence in the Department to extend its transdisciplinary reach, leverage the resources of the University, effectively manage the Departments organizational structure and research operations, as well as mentor junior faculty and students. This position, with a salary range of $275,000 - $400,000, is eligible for full-time employee health benefits. More information about the benefits that GW offers can be found here.

Qualifications: The Chair must have earned a doctoral or terminal degree (e.g., PhD, MD, DrPH, and/or ScD). The Chair must also be qualified to be tenured in the Department of Global Health. Applicants must have achievements commensurate with appointment at the full Professor level, including proven leadership excellence in research and/or practice, teaching, service & mentoring; a demonstrated commitment to scholarship; an established record of funding support and publications in peer-reviewed journals; and a proven ability to lead and foster collaborative and equitable partnerships in global health research and practice with institutions in the Global South. In addition, the Chair must have considerable expertise in hands-on, real world activities that extend beyond knowledge of relevant public health theory, principles and methods. Demonstrated practical, actual experience in international settings in general and in low- and middle-income country settings in particular as opposed to abstract and idealized familiarity with public health teachings is an essential quality for this post.

To Apply: Applications should be emailed to GWDGHChair@SpencerStuart.com and must include 1) a complete CV and 2) a letter of interest that addresses ones motivation to apply, highlights any experiences that align with the responsibilities and requirements described above, and details the applicants interest in the Department of Global Health. Review of applications will begin on October 30, 2024, and continue until the position is filled. Employment offers are contingent on the satisfactory outcome of a standard background screening. For the full position description or to send application materials, nominations, or inquiries, please contact the email address above. Only complete applications will be considered.
