Job Summary

Market Title: Business Manager Intermediate (100123) 

Working Title: Business Manager

Reports to: Randolph G. Adams Director 

Located on the central campus of the University of Michigan, the William L. Clements Library houses original resources for the study of American history and culture from the fifteenth to the early twentieth century.  The Business Manager leads the fiscal and administrative operations at the Clements Library with a focus on providing strategic insight to leadership. Randolph G. Responsibilities*

FINANCIALS (60%)

  • Use financial, HR and other operational data/reports to make recommendations on the allocation of resources, to advocate for programs and to support leadership decision-making
  • Track budgets, engage in strategic planning, and analyze cost variances.
  • Monitoring and reporting of financial activity on gift and endowment funds, contracts, grants, and general funds to ensure appropriate stewardship.
  • Partner with Clements staff by providing budget guidance and expertise; be a key resource for operational teams and with our fundraising efforts
  • Oversee our annual budget process and consult with others on purchasing, fund management, policies, reporting and internal controls
  • Submit annual budget and budget projections to the Office of Budget and Planning on behalf of the Director
  • Manage the annual internal controls process and ensure operational systems exist to support requirements
  • Ensure stipend payments for visiting research fellows
  • Partner with Clements Library Development staff to ensure timely reporting on grants and gift funds
  • Complete financial reports for external grants
  • Establish well-informed finance and facilities practices
  • Serve as a liaison between the Clements and University administrative, financial and purchasing units; problem-solve and make decisions on administrative matters; assist the Director as needed

FACILITIES (20%)

  • Provide oversight on facilities management and IT needs
  • Be an on-call resource for emergencies

OTHER (20%)

  • Be committed to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility and integrate that commitment into the completion of job responsibilities
  • Use independent judgment and analyze complex information when necessary
  • Manage multiple tasks with a demonstrated attention to detail as well as function in a dynamic environment with frequent interruptions
  • Support the Clements Library Associates Board of Governors
  • Other duties as needed

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance or Nonprofit Management
  • 5+ years working in an administrative function including 3+ years in a strategic or leadership capacity advising senior leaders on resource management 
  • 2+ years supervising and managing professional staff 
  • Experience developing business processes and using change management best practices for implementation
  • Expert level proficiency in budgeting and financial reporting 
  • Highly proficient facilities administration
  • Interest in Humanities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (can perform complex functions in Excel), Google Collaboration tools or related software

Salary: $85,000 - $95,000

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.
