A Brief Overview
We are seeking a Student Clinical Assistant II (Research) to support a high-impact study on pre- and post-natal Spina Bifida (SB) repair patients. As part of CHOP's team, which follows one of the largest SB cohorts in the country, you will work closely with clinical staff to collect and analyze data on SB patients, focusing on lower extremity kinematics and functional outcomes. Hybrid position, 15-20 hours per week- study collection and operations are slated to begin in February 2025 and will run through September 2025. This role will be essential in advancing our understanding of SB patients' functional status and improving patient care.

What you will do

  • Data Collection:
  • Capture brief video footage (3-5 minutes) of SB patients' lower extremity movements using 4K cameras, focusing on gait and other functional metrics.
  • Assist with extracting gait metrics, including step length, stride length, cadence, and range of motion (hip, knee, ankle).
  • Record additional functional assessments such as sit-to-stand, timed up-and-go, knee rise, and ankle lift metrics.
  • Database Management:
  • Input patient data into the CHOP Clinical Outcomes Data Archive (CODA) and ARCUS platforms, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Update patient profiles with urological data, demographics, comorbidity history, neurological function, pain scores, and other relevant clinical data.
  • Statistical Analysis and Data Processing:
  • Assist in the application of statistical models (e.g., univariate and multivariate regression analysis) to identify correlations between kinematic data and other clinical metrics.
  • Support the implementation of advanced methods (e.g., Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection, UMAP) and machine learning algorithms (e.g., HDBSCAN) to identify phenotypic subgroups and determine their correlation with functional outcomes.
  • Collaboration and Reporting:
  • Work with clinical, technical, and data teams, including the Center for Data Driven Discovery in Biomedicine (D3b) and major data warehouse partners, to ensure streamlined data analytics.
  • Communicate findings and contribute to reports, presentations, and manuscripts for publication

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED Enrollment in school Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field (e.g., biology, public health, or biomedical sciences) Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • Internships or paid experiences coordinating research study activities varying size and complexity Required
  • Several internships or paid experiences coordinating research study activities varying size and complexity Required
  • 1-3 years of experience in clinical research or clinical coordination, particularly in pediatric or rehabilitation settings Preferred (Projects conducted during undergraduate studies can count towards experience)

Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in statistical analysis or experience with tools like Python, R, or similar software is a plus
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills to manage data collection, team collaboration, and documentation.
  • Familiarity with gait analysis, kinematic data, or orthopedic assessment tools is a plus
  • Demonstrates the knowledge & ability to render age-appropriate care and services based on the patient and/or their developmental needs
