Full Job Description

The primary responsibility of the position is the management of patient assistance programs that effectively and efficiently addresses gaps in patient access to therapy
This position reports to the Director, Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation/CSR
Together with other team members, responsible for day-to-day management of patient assistance programs ensuring effective and efficient vendor operations, fulfillment and customer service
Tracks progress against strategic objectives, monitors metrics, analyzes trends and proactively identifies operational risks/issues and solutions
Reviews, analyzes and makes determinations for escalations and patient appeals; escalates and presents extraordinary cases to management
Manages external agencies and vendors for development of specific projects including budget management for those projects
Interfaces with Medical, Access, Reimbursement Strategy and Support, Finance, Law, Policy, Tax, Customer Relations, Brand, Distribution and Technical Operations, to understand obstacles faced by underserved patients
Manages supply chain issues as they relate to the patient journey through our programs
Manages new product and new indication launches into patient assistance programs and prepare for product loss of exclusivity that impacts patients in our programs
Engages with IT and data privacy on data feed development, IT mapping, website and SharePoint development
Develops and implements training to internal and external teams to ensure compliance with Patient Assistance policies and program business rules

This position offers a base salary typically between $170,000 and $200,000. The position may be eligible for a role specific variable or performance based bonus, relocation and or other compensation elements.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead and drive the overall strategic focus and efficient operation of the BI Cares Foundation - social business with an operating budget of over $8 million dollars, which annually donates approximately $800 million dollars worth of Boehringer Ingelheim medicines in the US and 77 countries around the world.
  • Evolve all Foundation programs through active thought leadership by identifying external philanthropic trends to positively impact Boehringer Ingelheim Cares and its patients.
  • Continually benchmark Boehringer Ingelheim Cares operations against other external Foundations to identify best practice opportunities. Build and leverage strategic relationships with community partners.
  • Interface with key Boehringer Ingelheim senior leaders to inform them on Boehringer Ingelheim Cares strategies and decisions that may impact their business or the corporate reputation.
  • Lead and manage the Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Steering Committee and Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Board.
  • Adjust strategies quickly and as needed to respond to the ever-changing environment and budgetary constraints.  Guidelines, processes, and governance are effectively established and routinely updated in accordance to Foundation' s needs. Partner with U.S. and global Quality Management to ensure the Boehringer Ingelheim Cares suppliers maintain a strong quality program that meets or exceeds Boehringer Ingelheim quality standards. Ensure that all activities are conducted in accordance to Boehringer Ingelheim Cares and company policies and procedures and that appropriate governance is at the core of everything we do. Oversee the close and continuous monitoring of the $800 million dollars worth of product donations to mitigate risks. Ensure product and channel security, proper import/export operations, abiding by international Good Storage Practices and the import/export laws of the US and the recipient countries. Ensures proper track and trace of inventory by batch/ lot in case of a recall. Oversee audits of our Boehringer Ingelheim Cares and CSR programs, including bi-annual audits of our Patient Assistance and Product Donation programs. Partner with the NA Audit Center of Excellence and other internal and external auditors to monitor identified opportunities/ potential required changes and follow up. Successfully complete audits, including the audits of our PAP and PDP vendors and programs and ensure any issues or identified opportunities for improvement are addressed in a timely manner. Ensure compliance with U.S. regulatory laws and standards including annual training of Boehringer Ingelheim Cares
  • Steering Committee and Board members, PAP administrator employees and other key stakeholders. Conduct annual trainings/ compliance updates for key stakeholders including the
  • Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Board and Steering Committee members. Understanding of access programs for the uninsured and underinsured patient populations
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a larger team
  • Outstanding interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills as well as exceptional organizational and project management skills are required
  • This role will not have any direct reports; however, the successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of managing multiple, conflicting priorities. Manage Disaster Relief Program, and associated employee engagement activities. Successfully communicate to and engage employees in our disaster relief efforts. Actively participate in industry groups, like PQMD, to develop and communicate industry best practices. During times of disaster, act with a sense of urgency with internal stakeholders and Product Donations
  • Program Partners to determine unmet medical needs. Secure product donations, request funding as needed from BI Cares Board and Steering Committee members to improve and save patient lives. Provide best practices and expertise to AH access to care programs. Providing insight and updates in regard to the PAP program metrics, data, and forecasting. 

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Advance Degree (MBA, MS, PharmD, JD) a plus
  • Knowledge of charitable patient assistance organizations, strongly preferred
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience within the pharmaceutical or related healthcare industry, commercial, regulatory or patient access experience is desirable
  • Understanding of access programs for the uninsured and underinsured patient populations
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a larger team
  • Outstanding interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills as well as exceptional organizational and project management skills are required
  • This role will not have any direct reports; however, the successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of managing multiple, conflicting priorities in a rapidly evolving, fast paced, complex environment

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
  • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required).
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
