Hybrid Position:

This position may be considered Hybrid based on PetSmart’s FlexSmart policy and business needs. A Hybrid work arrangement is considered to be a blend of onsite and remote work activity. Associates with a Hybrid work arrangement have a work space at Phoenix Home Office and can be required to come onsite between 1-5 days a week as determined by leadership and based on business needs.

Fully Remote Position:

This position is considered to be Fully Remote and work is done from another location outside of Phoenix Home Office (within the United States). Associates that are considered to be Fully Remote do not have a work space at Phoenix Home Office and can expect to be asked to travel to Phoenix Home Office several times a year [or more], based on business needs and in partnership with leadership. Associates that are considered to be Fully Remote will acknowledge the “Remote Work Agreement” upon hire.  

SUMMARY

PetSmart is looking for a Senior Data Platform Engineer to design, build and administer our Data Platform and enable strategic capabilities for the enterprise.  This role focuses on designing, building, and managing a robust Data Platform to support the company's strategic initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience Requirements:

• Over 6 years in large-scale data platform design and administration.
• At least 3 years in cloud architecture.

Technical Skills:

• Programming Languages: Expert knowledge of Python, Scala, and SQL.
• Cloud Platform Proficiency:
• Essential experience with cloud services; familiarity with Google Cloud preferred, with applicable knowledge of Azure and AWS.
• Proficient in Databricks, Snowflake, and Google Cloud services.
• Data Streaming Technologies: Familiarity with Spark Streaming and Pub/Sub.
• Infrastructure as Code:
• Proficient in Terraform for infrastructure provisioning and management.
• Experience with GitHub Actions for automating CI/CD workflows, including integration with Terraform for infrastructure deployment.
• Cloud Infrastructure Design: Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure capable of handling extensive datasets (1-100 Petabytes) and numerous concurrent users.
• Scripting Languages: Proficient in one or more scripting languages (Bash, PowerShell, Python) and version control tools (GitHub).
• Cloud Fundamentals: Strong understanding of IAM, RBAC, SaaS, IaaS, PaaS.
• Network Fundamentals: Strong understanding of cloud networking concepts, including load balancers, shared VPCs, and peering.

Key Responsibilities:

• Platform Development: Deliver a scalable data platform aligned with long-term business strategies and technology architecture to meet future demands.
• Data Management: Design capabilities for data ingestion, refinement, serving, and implement platform standards and user access policies.
• Prototyping: Develop proofs of concept and minimum viable products to validate solutions.
• Technology Trends: Stay updated on emerging technologies and advocate for platform capabilities across the organization.

Methodologies:

• Familiarity with SAFe, Agile, and Waterfall methodologies.

Soft Skills:

• Strong analytical problem-solving ability.
• Understanding of the cloud ecosystem and emerging technologies.

Prerequisite Communications and Interpersonal Skills

• Collaboration: Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with internal customers across multiple PetSmart teams (IT and Business).
• Learning Agility: Demonstrated capacity to learn and adopt new technologies and platform-related services quickly.
• Strategic Alignment: Ability to drive alignment and make strategic decisions among various audiences.
• Professional Relationships: Maintain professional collaboration and relationships with strategic partners.
• Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of engaging both technical and non-technical personnel and customers.

Principal Accountabilities

• Release and Change Management: Work within release and change management frameworks to ensure smooth transitions.
• Automation and Uplifts: Create sustainable systems and services through automation and enhancements.
• Documentation: Document processes and related knowledge comprehensively.
• Troubleshooting: Experience with troubleshooting using traces, log correlation, and metrics (SLA/SLO, monitoring, alerting, dashboarding), providing detailed post-mortems.
• Collaboration with Development Teams: Partner with development teams to enhance services through rigorous testing and release procedures.
