A Brief Overview

Research in Dr. Maurizio Pacifici's lab focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate skeletal growth and morphogenesis in fetal and postnatal life, using mammalian animal models as experimental tools. The information derived from these basic science research projects is used to uncover and understand the pathogenesis of congenital pediatric musculoskeletal disorders, including Hereditary Multiple Exostoses (HME) and Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP).

The Pacifici lab combines basic science studies with translational research. For example, lab staff conceived the idea of using synthetic retinoid agonists as therapeutics for FOP, leading to the identification of Palovarotene, which received FDA approval for FOP treatment in August 2023. The laboratory now focuses on identifying a therapeutic agent for HME.

The ideal candidate for this position is well-organized, detail-oriented, curious, and motivated, with a bachelor's degree in molecular and cell biology or a related field and previous experience working in a lab setting. Comfort with standard molecular biology techniques (PCR, running gels, etc.) and a proven ability to work in a team are critical. The successful candidate will have opportunities to contribute to several projects and resulting co-authorship on papers.

The applicant must be willing to work with mouse colonies daily and assist with their management (e.g., breeding, genotyping, record keeping, etc.). Prior experience with animal handling is preferred
