Job Summary

The Industrial & Manufacturing Systems Engineering (IMSE) Department at the University of Michigan-Dearborn invites applications for the position of Professor of Practice. This non-tenure track appointment is designed for distinguished practitioners who have made significant contributions to the field of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, and Human Centered Engineering Design. The successful candidate will bring applied engineering experience into our academic environment, enhancing our teaching and learning through practical, application-oriented education. The effort level for the appointment may be variable and will be determined based on need and/or mutual agreement.

Responsibilities*

  • Curriculum Development: Collaborate with faculty members to develop and update curriculum that reflects the current trends and needs of the industry, ensuring that our programs remain cutting-edge and relevant.
  • Student Mentorship: Serve as a mentor and advisor to senior design students, guiding them in their academic and professional development, and preparing them for successful careers in engineering.
  • Industry Collaboration: Leverage industry connections to facilitate partnerships, internships, and collaborative projects that enhance the educational experience and prepare students for real-world challenges.
  • Teaching Excellence: Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in programs offered by the IMSE department, especially Human-Centered Engineering Design. Prior teaching experience is advantageous, but not required. 

Required Qualifications*

  • A master's degree in Industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field; a doctoral degree is preferred but not required. 
  • A minimum of 20 years of progressive professional experience in engineering design and manufacturing, culminating with a senior leadership position.  
  • Experience with product design and innovation demonstrated through a record of publications and/or patents.
  • A passion for education and the ability to convey complex technical information to various audiences, including high school students, undergraduate students, and graduate students. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and industry partners.
