Mission Statement

Responsibilities*
- Exercise initiative, independent judgement, and a service-oriented attitude while scheduling patients for specialty and testing appointments.
- Coordinate relevant studies and tests as directed by faculty and clinical staff.
- Serve as liaison between primary care physicians, specialists and patients in the referral/authorization approval process.
- For PMR surgical cases, other specialties as added, assist with required surgical referrals and authorizations from insurance providers as needed. Work closely with Trinity Scheduling and Insurance verification teams.
- Manage multiple work queues daily.
- Obtain insurance authorizations, pre-certification, and benefit verifications for services at any of our outpatient clinics or surgery centers using established insurance company guidelines. This will include services performed at Trinity Health Center.
- Complete and manage referral and authorizations related to injections, office visits, testing, and surgical procedures, etc.
- Respond to patient and family referral and billing calls or inquires related to authorization concerns in a timely manner.
- Serve as a resource for physicians and all other staff, patients and outside third parties for authorizations.
- Provide relevant insurance information and updates to staff, providers, and managers.
- Accomplishes work in ways that maximize productivity and available resources while minimizing waste.
- Provide relevant insurance referral/authorization updates to staff, physicians and manager.
- Assist in developing new process and procedures within the health center . Provider input with on-going improvement plans.
- Maintain a large scope of knowledge regarding insurance plans, requirements and expectations in an ever changing environment.
- Respond to phone calls related to referral/authorization concerns
- Float as needed in the office in all aspects of the health center including Check-In, Check Out, Medical Records, Referral Coordinator
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications*
- High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.
- 3-4 years minimum experience preferred.
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
- Must have knowledge of front end systems (MiChart, Cadence, Resolute, Web Denis, M-Connect, I/Observer, etc.) and front end processes (Check-in, Check-out) including ICD-10 and CPT coding.
- Prior experience performing complex scheduling.
- Familiarity with obtaining medical records.
- Experience with referrals/authorizations and knowledge of insurance requirements for specialty and testing appointments.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to successfully complete multiple tasks within established and changing deadlines is required.
- Individual must exhibit a professional and positive image when interacting with patients, faculty and staff.
- Must also adhere to high standards of personal and professional conduct, possess excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills, and be able to relate well with people.
- Ability to accept direction from multiple sources, prioritize tasks and remain adaptable to rapid changes in work.
- Must have strong problem solving skills and be able to prioritize multiple tasks.
- Must have excellent attendance.
- Deomonstrated active listening, written, verbal and information technology skills.
Desired Qualifications*
- Familiarity with UMHS electronic medical record systems.
- Knowledge of Michigan Medicine Policies and Procedures.
- Experience working within a large, complex healthcare setting.
Work Schedule
This position is 40 hours/week, Monday-Friday 8:30 am to 5:30 p.m.. Evening and Saturday hours as assigned.

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
