A Brief Overview
The Child Life manager is responsible for (1) the supervision and management of Child Life personnel, (2) program evaluation and development (3) quality and process improvement, and (4) fiscal management of assigned units and/or programs.

What you will do
  • Human Resource Management:
  • Responsible for the recruitment, selection, training, coaching, and retention of quality staff and child life and patient media students.
  • Designs, plans and implements staff development reflective of current best practices in the field of child life to ensure a highly qualified and professional team.
  • Establishes performance standards and provides staff with ongoing feedback.
  • Responsible for the performance evaluation process, including the establishment of program standards and expectations. Guides staff members in identifying targeted, measurable, and achievable goals.
  • Creates, models, and supports an environment that fosters teamwork cooperation, respect, and diversity.
  • Fosters and maintains an environment where staff feel valued, appreciated and recognized.
  • Program Development:
  • Collaborates with the Director to develop and implement strategic initiatives that align with CHOP's annual strategic plan.
  • Assesses, develops, and oversees child life services to provide patients and their family members with high quality services to meet their individual and collective needs.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary leaders across the enterprise to design and support effective child life operations and systems that promote optimal patient care.
  • Serves as a content expert regarding child development, coping facilitation, environmental design, and pain management strategies for children (ages birth to 21) and its impact on patient care and successful outcomes.
  • Responsible for the daily operations of child life services, including but not limited to: staff scheduling, delivery of services, upholding service standards, and meeting facilitation.
  • Ensures compliance with professional standards, documentation, and regulatory requirements (e.g. Joint Commission, CMS).
  • Develops complete, current and relevant policies and procedures in accordance with organizational objectives, departmental scope of service, Family-Centered Care practices, and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Integrates trends in healthcare and the profession to identify future needs for program development, space, and financial resources.
  • Quality/Process Improvement:
  • Ensures services meet professional standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Provides for ongoing monitoring of key indicators and utilizes the established performance improvement process to improve services/care.
  • Oversees and maintains departmental data collection, analyzing data in order to maintain service excellence.
  • Provides leadership in the development, oversight, and completion of department goals.
  • Fiscal Management:
  • Is a strong financial steward with a good understanding of all financial components of the child life program (e.g. donor funds, operating budget).
  • Provides input into the development of the budget with design to support core operations and advance services and growth throughout the organization.
  • Adheres to operating and donor funded budgets.
  • Effectively manages the budget of assigned units and/or programs.
  • Collaborates with Development staff to identify, convey, and speak to the financial needs of child life services (including patient media and pet therapy services), providing supporting documentation and information upon request.
Education Qualifications
  • Master's Degree Required
Experience Qualifications
  • At least five (5) years experience in the field of Child Life Required
Skills and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of infant, child, and adolescent growth and development
  • Strong knowledge of therapeutic play techniques, pain management, and anxiety management interventions
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize and complete duties in a timely and organized manner
  • Works collaboratively and in a positive manner with others
  • Ability to train and supervise others
  • Performs work according to CHOP policies and procedures, professional standards of care, and applicable laws
  • Ability to demonstrate clinical leadership skills
  • Ability to set goals and judge results in accordance with the highest standards; care with sensitivity and respect; advance care through development of new ideas and technology; promote teamwork to achieve CHOP's mission, and understand and exceed customer expectations
Licenses and Certifications
  • Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) - Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) - upon hire - Required or
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) - National Council for Therapeutic Certification (NCTRC) - upon hire - Required or
  • Music Therapist Board Certified (MT-BC) - The Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) - upon hire - Required or
  • Art Therapy Board Certified (AT-BC) - Art Therapy Credentials Board, INC. - upon hire - Required
