This position is open to S.E.I.U. Wastewater Local 925 employees only.

About the Role:

This position provides lead direction to employees performing mechanical work on heavy industrial equipment and related systems at a wastewater treatment plant and associated facilities.  Maintaining and repairing plant process equipment allows WTD to meet all regulatory permit requirements. The West Point Treatment plant has won Gold and Platinum awards from the National Association of Clean Water agencies for the past 25 years for environmental stewardship.


About the Team:

Working in a team setting this person will use their journey-level maintenance experience to conduct and oversee high-level repairs on all types of rotating mechanical equipment including but not limited to, biosolids dewatering centrifuges, hydraulic systems, positive displacement pumps, centrifugal pumps, primary sedimentation equipment, influent and effluent pumps, bio-gas compressors, gearboxes, conveyance systems, and multiple piping systems.

Job Duties

What You Will Be Doing:

As a mentor, you will guide and support new and less experienced maintenance workers and maintenance mechanics. You will provide lead direction and technical assistance to the maintenance mechanical staff. This includes determining work assignments, priorities, and schedules, as well as participating in hiring and providing performance feedback.  You will also be tasked to work with the Operations and Maintenance training team to develop and find training for the maintenance employees you will be leading.

In terms of technical duties, you will be involved in training, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintenance of mechanical equipment and systems. Your role will also be involved in planning, coordinating, and making repairs in accordance with technical repair standards. This includes ordering repair parts and conducting post-repair follow-ups. Ensuring the job site safety of assigned mechanics will be another crucial aspect of your role. You will need to adhere to proper LOTO (lockout/tagout) and confined space protocols to maintain a safe working environment. Inspecting work in progress is essential to ensure that maintenance work meets trade standards, adheres to schedules, and follows safe working practices. You will also monitor work quality and quantity, providing suggestions to supervisors and other staff on how to improve methods and solve problems.


Reviewing and evaluating preventive maintenance procedures and schedules for machinery and equipment is crucial.  Conducting a life cycle analysis of machinery and equipment will help determine whether repair or replacement is the best course of action. Identifying technical resources such as external vendors and books will assist in making quick and accurate repairs for industrial machinery and systems.

You will perform mechanical maintenance work and provide expert advice when needed. Additionally, you may be involved in providing input into machinery or equipment design to optimize performance. This may include designing and refining machinery or plant systems to enhance processes and overall performance.


Identifying the need for new equipment and participating in specification development and exploring available manufacturers and options will be part of your responsibilities. You may also need to identify the need for new tools, equipment, machinery, and system replacements. Furthermore, you will assist in the inspection of machinery and equipment installed by external vendors or contractors.


Working with operations staff, engineers, and suppliers to explain the functioning of processes and procedures needed to operate new equipment is important to ensure smooth integration.


Lastly, you will be making decisions and facilitating communications between work groups as required. This will help maintain effective collaboration and ensure seamless workflow within the maintenance department.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

What You Bring:

  • 5 years as a journey-level mechanical maintenance or millwright work experience in an industrial maintenance environment.

  • 5 years of experience working in an industrial environment conducting mechanical repairs.

  • 5 years of experience conducting mechanical repairs in a Wastewater Treatment Plant setting.

  • Advanced knowledge of and experience in the application hydraulics, welding and rigging techniques and principles. Knowledge and experience in life cycle analysis including root cause analysis.

  • Skilled and experience in heavy equipment mechanical maintenance repair work and replacement criteria Knowledge and experience working with industrial safety standards and procedures related to mechanical maintenance work.

  • Skilled in the use, care and safe operation of basic power and hand tools. Skilled in plumbing techniques.

  • Skilled in welding techniques and principles and demonstrated skill in flat position welding.

  • Skilled in pumps (normal operation, motor components) and types of pumps, knowledge of packing and mechanical seals, laser alignments.

  • Skill in verbal and written communication techniques and principles.

  • Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.

  • Duration: This recruitment aims to fill a Special Duty Assignment (SDA) with an anticipated duration of up to 2 years.
