A Brief Overview
The Human Factors Engineer II is Human Factors trained with a deep skill set and knowledge of human factors science and corresponding framework and methodology. The HF Engineer II will provide human factors and human systems design expertise to support a broad, diverse portfolio of initiatives (Clinical and non-Clinical).

This position requires specialized understanding of the body of knowledge, methods, and skills related to human factors engineering and/or human centered systems design. The HF Engineer II must be detailed, action, solution and results oriented. The HF Engineer II must demonstrate innovation, foresight and mature judgment in supporting components of both small and large scale projects.


What you will do

  • Effort - The expectation is that time spent on projects will be:
  • 80% Tactical (performing and owning technical aspects of a project)
  • 10% Strategic (Planning and Guidance)
  • 10% Transferring Knowledge (Teaching, Coaching and Mentoring)

1. Technical - Human Factors

  • Support large scale human factors projects and independently lead small scale human factors projects including usability testing, developing study protocols, quantitative and qualitative data collection, data analysis, and preparation of technical reports.
  • Support ergonomics and using human factors science, recommend changes that will improve overall system performance, and improve health information technology (HIT).
  • Support the body of human factors expertise for enterprise-wide, strategic initiatives projects; build effective relationships that allow her/him to navigate culture and build credibility in a way that respects organizational values; and support development of organizational strategies that enhance growth and improvement.
  • Assist clinicians, clinical leaders and administrators to manage and understand human factors measures and to use quantitative and qualitative data analysis to drive fact-based decision making.

2. Technical - Change Management - Support work in a variety of clinical/business settings to orchestrate effective individual and organizational effectiveness, including:

  • Assessing human systems to gather information about factors such as satisfaction, conflict, confusion, interest.
  • Strategizing with team members to determine activities or interventions to create change in a human system.
  • Effectively engaging employees in an open dialogue and other activities to address resistance and build commitment to change
  • Developing communications strategies to support change

3. Technical - Team Facilitation

  • Effectively works with and facilitates small-scale teams with clearly defined roles and responsibilities.
  • Supports effective sponsorship and process ownership (Accountability)
  • Manages dysfunctional team behaviors when observed

4. Building Organization Capability

  • Supports the human factors program development at CHOP, including: demonstrate concrete value/impact provided by human factors; ensure connections to the performance improvement team; support for building capability throughout CHOP; and overall, advance the impact of human factors, human systems thinking, and patient safety at CHOP.
  • Supports integration of human factors engineering with the Improvement team and CHOP improvement framework
  • Participates in and supports external dissemination of program initiatives including peer-reviewed publication of results.

5. Patient Safety/Accreditation/Regulatory

  • Active support of RCAs and ACAs and resulting action items
  • Partnership with patient safety team in investigations, interviews, and system improvement recommendations and projects
  • Supports regulatory and accreditation activities, including participation in Joint Commission and Department of Health surveys and accreditation readiness
  • Works with leaders and staff to integrate Safety Behaviors for Error Prevention into one's work.
  • Acts as an organizational patient safety champion, and as a working member of the patient safety and quality improvement leadership of the organization, supports patient safety concepts and methods and high reliability principles.

Education Qualifications

  • Master's Degree Required
  • Master's Degree human factors engineering, human systems engineering, cognitive systems engineering, human/computer interaction, engineering psychology, sociotechnical systems engineering, or related field Preferred
  • Doctorate human factors engineering, human systems engineering, cognitive systems engineering, human/computer interaction, engineering psychology, sociotechnical systems engineering, or related field Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • At least three (3) years within the area of demonstrating application of human factors to achieve impactful operational results Required

Skills and Abilities

  • Understanding of human factors science, theories, models, methods, design and analysis
  • Knowledge of human factors, usability, data collection, and analysis
  • Experience conducting usability evaluations and human in the loop simulations
  • Experience conducting data collection, analysis, and reporting
  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Visio
  • Familiarity with database tools
  • Demonstrates strong ability to prioritize work, excellent organizational skills and initiative to improve processes.
  • Change agent demeanor. Must be a flexible thinker, with an ability to quickly adapt to a changing environment.
