Job Summary
Manage the operational and personnel activities of the clinical laboratory as well as perform the routine laboratory duties of a Medical Technologist.
Responsibilities*
- Plan, assign and provide day-to-day technical supervision of qualified personnel performing testing and reporting high complexity test results.
- Responsible for hiring, training, managing HR situations and annual evaluations for laboratory staff.
- Participate in the design and implementation of the quality assurance program for the laboratory.
- Responsible for reviewing procedures and policies no less than biennially within the document management system. This includes modifying, and archiving. Final approval for any new or revised document is completed by the CLIA Laboratory Director.
- Provide advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, interpretation, consultation, and verification of test results. Acts as technical adviser/expert in area of expertise.
- Assist in the development and implementation of new protocols and selection of new equipment.
- Performs validation of equipment, analyzers, and tests in area of expertise.
- Recommend workflow redesign for improved laboratory operation.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory and licensing agencies.
- Ensure compliance with affirmative action and safety programs.
- Participate with the laboratory director in the selection and evaluation of laboratory equipment and supplies.
- Assess training competency of new employees, initially, and after 6 months. annual
- Conduct training competencies for all new test methods or new equipment
- Distribute proficiency testing among employees.
- Prepare Laboratory Quality Reports and Quarterly Laboratory Reports for Pathology.
- Participate in quality audits by the Office of Clinical Affairs Good Tissue, Manufacturing & Laboratory Practices.
- Participate in Pathology Quality Audits.
- Monitor laboratory budgets and spending and overseeing correct filing of charges.
- Maintain a constant supply of burn treatment tissues and products, including the evaluation and qualification of new products and suppliers and participating in the creation of charge codes.
- Represent the laboratory at departmental and hospital meetings.
- Participate in the resolution of employee complaints and grievances.
- Perform all duties of a Trauma Burn Laboratory Medical Technologist including microbiology and skin banking, dispensing and documenting burn treatment supplies, quality control and proficiency testing and equipment maintenance.
Supervision Received: General supervision is received from the Burn Center Laboratory Director and Trauma Burns Administrative Manager.
Supervision Exercised: Functional supervision is exercised over Laboratory Technicians, Medical Technologists, Medical Technologist Specialists, and other assigned staff.
Required Qualifications*
- A baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology or biological science that is directly related to the duties of the position and eligibility for medical technology certification by a professional society.
Desired Qualifications*
- A baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology with certification by an accepted professional agency as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Clinical or Medical Laboratory Scientist (CLS or MLS). Must be registry eligible.
- Experience in a clinical laboratory in microbiology is desirable. Experience or certification in skin or tissue banking is desirable. (Certified Tissue Bank Specialist)

Working Conditions

- Participate in a rotating weekend, holiday and on call work schedule.
Background Screening
