A Brief Overview
The supervisor is held responsible for the proper performance of all laboratory procedures within his/her Section; supervises technologists, technicians, and other related personnel; schedules work duties; and supervises performance of such duties.
What you will do
- Schedule work duties
- Justifies overtime in writing within three working days
- Schedules staff, monitors and maintains budgeted hours including overtime
- Constantly reviews and improves systems for increased efficiency and eliminates rework and waste.
- Responsible for all technical work performed
- Ensures that established turnaround time thresholds are met for STAT, urgent, and routine testing
- Assures that licensing and accreditation requirements are in full compliance
- Participates and passes all proficiency testing
- Stays within federal and state guidelines
- Ensures all procedure manuals are up to date
- Reviews procedure manuals annually
- Maintains and controls supply and reagent inventory
- TQM-CQI
- Participate in at least one TQM-CQI project
- Inter/Intra-Departmental Committees
- Participate in at least one committee during year
- Provides an environment of open communication

- Establishes department standards of excellence; assures consistent implementation by all staff.
- Establishes integrated systems which improve services and are supportive of the Hospital's mission.
- Develops, tests, implements, and evaluates new and creative approaches to meeting departmental and institutional goals.
- Integrates trends in healthcare and own profession to forecast future departmental and institutional needs for program development, space, and financial resources.
- Creates/supports an environment that fosters teamwork, cooperation, respect, and diversity.
- Recruits, coaches, develops, and retains qualified, competent staff. Ensures staff meets all requirements of position.
- Creates and maintains an environment where staff feel valued, appreciated, and recognized.
- Demonstrates an effective open door communication policy and process with staff.
- Prepares and monitors budget(s) for assigned area(s).
- Supports, enforces, and interprets institutional/departmental policies and procedures.
- Compiles with CHOP safety, infection control and security policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment.
- Participates in professional and community activities.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to render age-appropriate care and services based on patients' developmental needs. If applicable, please state the specific age range of patients (0-21)
Education Qualifications
- Associate's Degree Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT), Biology, Chemistry, Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), or similar field of study. Required
- Bachelor's Degree Biology, Chemistry, Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), or similar field of study. Preferred
Experience Qualifications
- At least three (3) years of practical laboratory experience including instrumentation Required
- At least five (5) years of practical laboratory experience including instrumentation Preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of computers
- Ability to handle confidential materials
- Ability to work the bench when necessary
- Ability to handle and interpret clinical data
- Demonstrated leadership ability
- Must possess critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills
- Strong communication and organizational skills
