The Center for Campus Involvement (CCI) is a dynamic, student-focused department that serves all undergraduate and graduate students through programs, student organization administration, and learning and development. Through meaningful involvement, CCI creates transformative experiences, a vibrant community, and lifelong memories for University of Michigan students. CCI recognizes and supports over 1,700 student organizations through education, advising, advocacy and services. CCI also implements hundreds of social, educational, and cultural programs each year, focused on building community within and beyond University Unions' facilities.

University Unions Overview (http://uunions.umich.edu)

University Unions drives community building and belonging through the integration of its three student union facilities (Michigan Union, Michigan League, Pierpont Commons), Center for Campus Involvement, Campus Information, meeting/event spaces, retail food, bookstore and other services to support student success. UU works in close partnership with Palmer Commons, an academic meeting facility, Conferences & Event Services and Michigan Dining to provide student-focused and customer-oriented service to the campus community.

Position Summary:

As the Associate Director, you will lead dynamic student programs, oversee student organization development, and manage major events and ticketing content areas in the Center for Campus Involvement. Your efforts will foster community within University Unions, collaborate with campus partners, and enrich student life at the University of Michigan. This role directly supervises three full-time staff members and indirectly supervises six to eight full-time staff members, as well as dozens of student employees. Reporting to the Director of the Center for Campus Involvement/University Unions Associate Director, the Associate Director provides comprehensive internal department management.

Responsibilities*

Department Leadership (40%)

  • Guide strategic goals for the department and unit, emphasizing the college union's role and student engagement
  • Lead Student Programs, Student Organizations, and Major Events/Ticketing areas within the Center for Campus Involvement
  • Oversee the SOAR Standards of Conduct and Accountability Procedures
  • Promote student programs in University Unions to foster community
  • Ensure integrative learning and leadership for student organization leaders
  • Lead CCI's small business operations, including the Michigan Union Ticket Office and Student Organization Resource Center
  • Partner with Student Life Research on CCI assessment
  • Address University policies, procedures, and barriers affecting CCI's work
  • Cultivate collaborative relationships within CCI and the University for a seamless student experience
  • Uphold, interpret, and create policies
  • Use well-considered decision-making methods
  • Model and coach customer service delivery
  • Foster a positive and ethical workplace
  • Assist the Director with department management

Supervision and Advising (30%)

  • Supervise three lead managers within CCI
  • Indirectly supervise eight to ten full-time staff, graduate interns, and student employees
  • Ensure cohesive student employee experiences across CCI
  • Perform human resource functions: job creation, interviewing, training, evaluations, and disciplinary actions
  • Foster a team environment of accountability and commitment
  • Provide feedback, empathize with staff needs, recognize achievements, and recommend improvements
  • Lead staff meetings and retreats
  • Assist the Director with the CCI Student Advisory Board

University Unions, Student Life, and University Service (20%)

  • Represent CCI and UU on committees and working groups within and outside Student Life
  • Serve on the University Unions Management Team
  • Co-lead the Welcome to Michigan Program with the Associate Director of New Student Programs
  • Serve on the Student Life Activism Response Team
  • Build partnerships with University colleagues, including General Counsel, Risk Management, Public Safety, Facilities, New Student Programs, Alumni Association, Student Life Research, and academic units

Financial Responsibility (10%)

  • Oversee budgets and work with staff on fiscal management practices, including accurate records and projections
  • Implement University and departmental purchasing and procurement procedures
  • Administer the student organization management system license agreement
  • Approve payroll

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, or related field
  • Five years of experience in student activities or related field
  • Three years of experience supervising full-time or graduate student staff
  • Experience with and knowledge of student activities in a higher education setting

Desired Qualifications*

  • An understanding of and commitment to the college union philosophy
  • Four or more years of experience supervising full-time staff
  • Experience managing complex organizational budgets
  • Multicultural competencies

Financial/Budgetary Responsibility:

  • Budgets totaling over one million dollars.

Working Conditions:

  • Primary work space will be located in the Michigan Union
  • Some evenings and weekends may be required during high volume times

Direct Reports:

  • 1 Lead Manager, Major Events and Ticketing
  • 1 Lead Manager, Student Organizations
  • 1 Lead Manager, Student Programs

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.

Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.
